Lyrics

Muhammad My Friend

All the versions of this article: [English] [français]

Muhammad my friend
it’s time to tell the world
we both know it was a girl back in Bethlehem
and on that fateful day
when she was crucified
she wore Shiseido Red [1] and we drank tea
by her side

sweet sweet sweet
used to be so sweet to me

Muhammad my friend
I’m getting very scared
teach me how to love my brothers
who don’t know the law
and what about the deal on the flying
trapeze got a peanut butter hand
but honey do drop in at the
Dew Drop Inn [2]

sweet sweet sweet
between the boys and the bees

and Moses I know
I know you’ve seen fire
but you’ve never seen fire
until you’ve seen Pele blow
and I’ve never seen light
but I sure have seen gold
and Gladys [3] save a place for me
on your grapevine
till I get my own TV show

ashre ashre ashre ashre [4]
and if I lose my Cracker Jacks at the
tidal wave I got a place
in the Pope’s rubber robe
Muhammad my friend
it’s time to tell the world
we both know it was a girl
back in Bethlehem
we both know it was a girl
back in Bethlehem

Footnotes

[1] Shiseido Red is a lipstick from the famous Japanese luxury cosmetics brand.

[2] Tori revealed over a phone interview with a journalist from Singapore in 1996 that Dew Drop Inn is "originally a name for some very old jazz clubs." She said she was inspired to use the name because of the 70’s TV series The Waltons, in which Jason, the hero’s younger brother, plays in a honky tonk called the Dew Drop Inn.

[3] Tori gives a nod to the American soul singer Gladys Knight, who recorded the hit single "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" in the late 60’s.

[4] ashre ashre ashre is actually the Hebrew for "we are one".
